Community Education & Outreach
The founders of Polaris understand the requirements of training to bring dancers to a level of artistic and technical precision. Because of this, the directors of Polaris have developed educational programming that supports the state content standards that teachers, students and schools must fulfill.
The founders of Polaris feel very strongly that these benefits should be equally available to underprivileged youth. That is why Polaris Dance Theatre, in partnership with Self Enhancement, Inc., has developed a curriculum of dance training rooted both in the deep and rich tradition of technical dance and in the lush cultural landscape of North and Northeast Portland. Polaris strives to create opportunities for youth in our community through our contemporary dance program implemented at Pacific Artists Dance Center in Portland, Oregon. Pacific Artists Dance Center is dedicated to providing the finest quality pre-professional dance instruction in an environment that is challenging, disciplined and rigorous while at the same time safe, healthy and nurturing.
Our residencies, workshops and masterclasses can also be individually designed to meet specific curriculum goals, enhance academic and artistic competency and develop skills necessary for success in the professional dance world.
Polaris knows that the study of dance:
enhances self-esteem and self-confidence
connects students to their bodies
develops coordination and physical poise
teaches teamwork and collaboration
contributes to a student's aesthetic education
provides structure and discipline
can teach us about diverse cultural backgrounds
invites students to experience the joy of movement
nurtures problem-solving and creative process skills
In addition to its youth programs, Polaris invites guest choreographers and other artists from eclectic technical backgrounds to set work on the company or collaborate through other mediums. Polaris Dance Theatre also holds ongoing classes and open rehearsals.
